The
Bramshaw Hill Herd was established in 1994 by Alison and Howard
Smith at Court Farm, Bramshaw, near Lyndhurst in the New Forest,
which explains the prefix. In November 2000 the Herd was moved
to their present home following the acquisition of Daslett
Farm and currently there are 34 pedigree breeding cows with
35 pedigree followers making good use of the farm’s
136 acres, together with additional land rented on a seasonal
basis. The farm also has a commercial suckler herd of 45 cows,
predominately being Simmental Cross Cows, all of which are
put to a Pedigree Aberdeen Angus Service Sire. The offspring
from the commercial suckler herd are sold at 16-18 months
of age as stores at our local Shaftesbury Market.
Our
aim, as pedigree breeders, is to produce breeding bulls that
have the confirmation and breeding traits required by both
pedigree breeders and non-pedigree breeders alike. Bulls are
usually sold privately off the farm; however, bulls have been
successfully sold at Perth and more locally at Salisbury.
Surplus heifers, when available, are sold at bulling age.
The
herd is also becoming well-known on the show circuit and shows
regularly attended include The Royal Bath & West, The
Royal Show, New Forest & Hampshire Show, Gillingham &
Shaftesbury, Alresford and Romsey Shows. 2004 was a particularly
successful year with the herd winning first breed championship
at Romsey with a yearling heifer, Bramshaw Hill Etude C143.
The herd was runner up in the interbreed pairs championship
at The New Forest & Hampshire Show, having previously
won the Class in 1999 and 2003.
